If you travel for business on a regular basis, you likely get to see different parts of the country. Depending on when you stay, you may also get to witness firsthand how the travel industry is ever changing. You may also be completely exhausted by it. I know when I was doing a lot of heavy traveling, I was starting to dread it.
I even started to develop anxiety thinking about it. I explained how I was feeling to a close-friend who offered me some of the advice you will find below. One way to help you look forward to your trips is to treat yourself. Whether it's something like ordering room service while you watch a film or scheduling a massage, do something that you will always look forward to doing. Try to choose something that is sustainable for your travels.
It doesn't matter if it's something big or small. As long as it makes sense for you and isn't going to detract from your work, you should not feel guilty for indulging. Find a landmark or something that is culturally ificant to the city you are visiting. It doesn't have to be costly or inconvenient but it should be focused on where you are.
For instance, visiting a famous bookshop or eating a local delicacy can help put some adventure back into your travels. This may require adding an extra day or afternoon to your trip but, if you can, get out of the city and see a bit of the countryside.
Not only does it give you a chance to see something new, it may also help you clear your head. If getting out of the city isn't feasible, try to find a park. Getting out of the office and into nature can help you reset.
I've definitely had some of my more creative ideas come to fruition while I've been walking at the park. While this step as well as the steps above may all mesh together, it's worth repeating that you need to take time for yourself. Even if you are an extrovert, make some time to do something for you that doesn't involve work or colleagues.
Give yourself a chance to be "off" and enjoy the destination.
I recommend getting into the habit of taking a walk, either around the hotel or around the office, to all business travelers. Not only can it help you refocus on what you need to do, it can be good exercise. If possible, plan your walks around sunrise or sunset. If you are going to be traveling a lot for work, you may as well stay in a place that you prefer. And if you're loyal to one chain, consider ing their loyalty program or applying for their credit cards if they offer any to take advantage of your stays there. You may also want to consider upgrading your seats when you fly.
